At Oasis Skateboard Factory (OSF), a publicly funded alternative school design program in the Toronto District School Board, skateboards are a way to experience success and earn high school credits. OSF teachers and community partners reengage students who had not previously experienced school success with a program that teaches them to design and build decks, create a brand that reflects their personal vision and to spray graphics with impact. They explore a range of curricular areas through high profile, public arts and entrepreneurship projects run in collaboration with professional mentors, earning a range of credits including English, Media, Business, Marketing, Arts, Design and Leadership. OSF students also become part of a hard-working team, building a successful business while succeeding in school and developing transferable creative and entrepreneurial skills.
